A Chinese mottled green jade grain-scoop or ceremonial cuff with eight shallow ridges carved to the interior. This form is illustrated in ‘Ancient Chinese Jades’ from the Winthorpe Collection in the Fogg Art Museum by Max Loehr, 1975 Cat 323 and 324 as probably Western Chou. A similar example is illustrated by Nott ‘Chinese jade throughout the ages’ plate 15 from the A.W.Bahr Collection as Chou Dynasty 1122- 249 B.C. The use of stone with deep russet inclusions and the thinness and elegance of the current example would suggest a slightly later date. Han Dynasty or slightly later. Length 16.9 cm Width at narrow end 15.6 cm.
